Hellhound On My Ale

Availability:
Limited

2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.

Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we at Dogfish are stoked for this mighty musical centennial? To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Dogfish Head update: Boston Beer Co. collab, Noble Rot bottles, Bitches Brew
John Holl, reporting for the Wall Street Journal, broke the news yesterday that Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione and Boston Beer Co.‘s Jim Koch are collaborating on a beer for SAVOR called Savor Flowers:
Last week Jim Koch of the Boston Beer Co., which produces Sam Adams, and Sam Calagione, the brewer at Delaware’s Dogfish Head Ales, collaborated on a brew that will be served exclusively this summer at Savor, a gourmet beer and food event held annually in Washington, D.C.
The beer, Savor Flowers, is brewed with rose water and uses an especially floral, experimental variety of hops that goes by the number 369. The brewers added a tincture to the beer that was created inside a whiskey barrel first used by Mr. Koch in 1993 to age a triple bock. With only 30 barrels planned, the men compared it to a public art installation: Only a few people will experience it before it becomes a memory.
Last weekend, Brewbound got a couple scoops during a short talk with Calagione (video above). Calagione “let one out of the bag” apparently, revealing that the brewery would be releasing more Bitches Brew late this fall. He also mentioned that the brewery will be making a formal announcement in “3-4 weeks” (now 2-3 weeks) about its upcoming collaboration with Sony, Robert Johnson’s Hellhound on my Ale.
Finally, Calagione announced that Noble Rot will be coming out in champagne bottles in November. The 8% ABV beer uses Botrytis-infected grapes that give it a sour character without the use of wild yeast. The brewery discusses the beer further during a test batch back in January.
